Update on Proposed Tree Removal Moratorium

As one of the co-sponsors of the order to impose a temporary moratorium on removing healthy significant trees on private property, I was disappointed that Monday’s night’s meeting did not result in immediate passage of this amendment to the Tree Ordinance. Preserving our tree canopy and adding additional protections for healthy significant trees are a major priority. As I said in the meeting, we have an emergency when it comes to our tree canopy, and we need a temporary moratorium on removing healthy trees until the Urban Forest Master Plan Task Force provides their recommendations. (The next Task Force is meeting on Thursday, January 31 at 6pm at CRLS in the Media Cafe.)

An Ordinance Committee hearing has been scheduled at City Hall for February 14 at 5:30pm to hold further discussion on the matter before the full City Council can vote on it again. Members of the public may attend and comment. The hearing may be televised and live-streamed.

There are reports on the debate by Cambridge Day and the Cambridge Chronicle.
